A Dictionary of Modern Critical Terms

A Dictionary of Modern Critical Terms

Autor: Roger Fowler

Número de Páginas: 407

This book, first published in 1987, differs from many other ‘dictionaries of criticism’ in concentrating less on time-honoured rhetorical terms and more on conceptually flexible, powerful terms. Each entry consists of not simply a dictionary definition but an essay exploring the history and full significance of the term, and its possibilities in critical discourse. This title is an ideal basic reference text for literature students of all levels.

Genre Theory and Historical Change

Genre Theory and Historical Change

Autor: Ralph Cohen

Número de Páginas: 432

Ralph Cohen was highly regarded as the visionary founding editor of New Literary History, but his own theoretical essays appeared in such a scattering of publications that their conceptual originality, underlying coherence, and range of application have not been readily apparent. This new selection of twenty essays, many published here for the first time, offers a synthesis of Cohen’s vital work. In these pages Cohen introduces change and continuity as essential modes of discourse in the study of literary behavior, an approach that can produce reliable narratives of literary, artistic, and cultural change. Here Cohen conceptualizes and develops a compelling, innovative theory of genre that promotes a systematic study of historical change, offering rewarding insights for twenty-first-century scholars.

Literary Theory in Germany

Literary Theory in Germany

Autor: Margot E. Zutshi

Número de Páginas: 210

This study examines the genre theories of Emil Staiger (Grundbegriffe der Poetik) and Käte Hamburger (Die Logik der Dichtung), and the evaluation theories of Hans-Egon Hass and Walter Müller-Seidel, in the context of post-war literary theory in West Germany. The close analysis of these theories, representative of developments up to 1965, shows that they have fundamental characteristics in common which are absent from later work in this field. To a greater or lesser extent all four are ahistorical, normative, and indebted to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century ideas on aesthetics. Changes in literary theory since 1965 involve a complete break with the past: these include the substitution of a descriptive concept of literature for a normative and aesthetic one, the narrowing of the gap between theory and contemporary literature, and the demand that literary study should become a historical discipline with particular emphasis on the role of the reader.

La edición crítica de la música

Autor: James Grier
